Runty was a sable male Syrian hamster. He was born on 26th August 2002 and was one of Barley and Fudge's Litter (brother to Peppermint). He passed on in Sept 05.
Runty (as his name suggests) was the runt of the litter. He was about half the size of the rest, and didn't open his eyes until after them. We could always see a little black body lurking at the back of the nest box when all the others came stampeding out for food. We made sure he got his share though be handing him lettuce leaves and 'baby hamster mush'. When he eventually came out we noticed tht there waas something not quite right ~ his lower spine and tail were twisted back over his body. He never seemed in any pain and we are not sure why he was like this ~ whether he was a bit 'squashed' inside Mum, whether he was injured or whether it was a genetic defect we will never know.
One by one all the baby hams were chosen by their new owners, but for some reason Lynne would never show Runty (then called Prince Zarco to try and persuade people to choose him) to anyone! She said he was too small! Shortly after her birthday, a new Gabber Rex cage appeared in the ha mster room, and we realised Runty was going to stay!
Runty had a long and happy life, reaching 3, which is a very good age for a hamster, especially a runt! He enjoyed 'talking' with his brother Peppermint, and was forever asking him if 'Santa was coming tonight'! He gradually became slower and less active, and one day as found peacefully in his nest.
Runty was a lovely hamster and very special. He was a true 'gentleham' and a real big softie. He loved his cuddles and his treats, and he and his brother were spoilt rotten with toys. R.I.P Runty, we will always love you.
