Barley was a black-eyed cream banded female Syrian hamster. She was born on 11th April 2002 and died on 29 April 2004. She came from Pets at Home. When we went to get her there were no female hamsters out the front. We asked a member of staff, who went to have a look at the back, and came back with a large cage full of hammies!
After finally choosing one, we then had to decide on the name. It was between Barley and Candy, but we decided on Barley, because of her colour.
Barley became the proud mother of 10 adorable pups, after we mated her to Fudge, a friend's hamster. She was a brilliant Mum and cared for the litter wonderfully. You can find out more about the litter on the 'Litters' page.
We then kept two of her babies, Peppermint and Runty. The three of them were the beginning of showing! Barley was the first hamster we ever entered into the main section at a show. We put her in the patterned class, but it was a big entry, and she being a petshop hamster against breeder hams didn't get anything!
